Prayer for the Week
Jesus, You are the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. You experienced in your earthly life every dark discouragement that is part of our own. You endured in the face of suffering to bring us victory over sin and death.
Therefore, Jesus, because You know us,
because you know our sorrows, struggles, and shame,
grant us the Spirit of Your presence to comfort and to guide.
Train our ears to hear the encouragement of those who have already finished their race. Train our eyes to focus on Your victory in every moment of weakness. Train our hands to reach out and encourage those who run this race with us.
Jesus, we cannot move forward except by Your grace; be present in our relationships.
Amen.
Taking worship home
With a friend or family member talk about one or more of the following:
What is your favorite sport/sports team? How do you cheer them on?
Do you think Jesus was ever discouraged? What encouraged Jesus? How do you see endurance in Jesus?
Talk about the relationship between encouragement and endurance.
Friends and family members who have died in Christ are still cheering us on to endurance and faithfulness.
Who is in your “great cloud of witnesses?” Who are you remembering as we celebrate the faithful who have died in Christ?
Talk about some of the ways these people helped shape your faith and life. Tell a story or two about someone you love who is now with Jesus.
Think of some of the most difficult things you have faced or are facing right now. Share one or two with someone you trust.
In what ways did Jesus in His earthly ministry experience something similar? How does your perspective change when you see Jesus as sharing your struggle?
Ask someone you trust to speak a promise to you from Jesus for this week.
What are some of the concrete ways you experience encouragement in your daily life? What encourages your faith?
Brainstorm ten ways you can encourage someone in your life this week.
