Thy Will Be Done

In the third petition of the Lord’s prayer, we pray that God’s will be done.  Martin Luther reminded us that God’s will is not dependent on our prayers.  God’s will is done because nothing exists that can resist the will of God.  When we pray this petition, we pray that God’s will be done through us.  We are asking for God to remove the sin that hinders our service for the will of God.  We ask that God would refocus our lives so that we see God’s will and do not become lost in the fog of our wants.  We are asking God to renew our joy in the will of God so that we eagerly live for Him.

The question that often arises is, what is the will of God? But more often, we ask, “What is God’s will for my life?” “What is God’s will for our marriage, our church, our family….?”  In posing these questions, we assume that God’s will for our lives is distinct from His will for the church or our families. While this assumption is popular and understandable, it is not entirely accurate.  God’s will is a unified purpose find the lost, redeem the captives, restore the broken, and let His grace rule our hearts and actions.  His will may manifest differently in various contexts, but its core remains unchanged.

This understanding can be liberating for us.  We often find ourselves immobilized, afraid to make a move because we are unsure of God’s will for our lives. We worry about making the wrong choices, about future problems or success. But knowing that God’s will is for His Kingdom, we can find freedom in seeking to align our purpose and our lives with His will. Regardless of what the future holds, our lives will always have purpose and meaning because they are centered on His will.
