It has been a number of years but I still remember celebrating first communion with the students of Trinity Lutheran Church as a new pastor in Wausau, Wisconsin. One by one these young disciples heard the words of Jesus and responded to His invitation to take, eat, and drink. They had been taught about the Lord’s Supper and were prepared to receive it. Jesus met them there as He promised and filled them with His presence.
On October 26, 2014, we will have the privilege of witnessing young disciples celebrating their first communion across the St. Luke Lutheran Church multisite. Jesus will meet them and us as we respond to His invitation to take, eat, and drink. We will come forward as a community of faith and, whether it is the first time or the five hundredth time, we will join together to receive the real presence of Jesus as He gives us His own body and blood. I’m looking forward to that day and I hope you are, too!
As you prepare to join in the celebration of First Communion across the multisite, please read Pastor Scott Giger’s blog, “Given For You… Really,” as he explains the Lutheran understanding of Lord’s Supper.
St. Luke Lutheran Church invites anyone who is baptized and in at least grade 6 to participate in our Lord’s Supper class on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the Great Room at St. Luke-Ann Arbor. Those completing this class are eligible to receive First Communion on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at their worshiping site. Contact your site leader with questions regarding First Communion.
